WELCOME TO THE BRUNSWICK JEWISH COMMUNITY

WHO WE ARE

This group started in St James some 15+ years ago and has undergone many iterations with the changing population and will likely continue to do so. We are very informal, free and open to any Jew who wants to join and we very warmly welcome non-Jewish spouses.

We all come from diverse and varied backgrounds. Most of us are non-practicing, many of us are married to non-Jews, and few of us are members of a synagogue. The one thing we all share is knowing a Jewish community is available for us, whether to meet socially or be able to say Kaddish for the passing of a loved one.

We welcome you to our community and look forward to getting to know you!

HOW WE CONNECT

Our get togethers currently include the following, and hopefully will grow along with our population:

MONTHLY KADDISH MINYAN We meet the last Thursday of every month for a short, casual afternoon service to provide a minyan (required quorum of 10 Jewish adults) needed to say Kaddish for a loved one. Knowledge of prayers or Hebrew is not required; the mitzvah is being counted among the 10 Jewish adults needed for this prayer to be recited.

SOCIAL, RITUAL, HOLIDAY
- Combined Rosh Hashana for Tashlich and Yom Kippur for a Yizkor service and "break fast" These services are conducted mostly in English and as a community, we light a Yizkor memorial candle together.
- Chanukah pot luck, where we light the menorah together as a community. Usually held on a Saturday during Chanukah, we also incorporate Havdallah and sing Hatikvah as a community.

HOW TO STAY CONNECTED

You will receive emails because at some point you asked to be included/subscribed to the Brunswick County Jewish Community email list.

Emails are infrequent -- typically notices on the above referenced subjects and occasional items of interest to the community (ie Wilmington Jewish Film Festival). There is no option to target your email preferences so by subscribing you will receive all my emails to the Jewish community.

As we grow, we need to use communication techniques that grow with us, and I thank you for your patience as I work through it. You may unsubscribe at any time, which means you will get no further notices from the Jewish community.

This is a casual group made entirely of volunteers. There are no dues and no committees.. I started spearheading this current effort soon after I moved to St James in April 2016 with the intent of finding a minyan closer than Wilmington so I could say Kaddish for my parents. Although I was raised with a solid Jewish foundation, there is still much I don't know and am learning along the way. Please, if you have any questions about Judaism or rituals or anything we do as a group, ask me! As a Jew, you should always feel like you're a part of a community.
